Ernesto Alexis Vega Rojas was born in Mexico City, came through at Toluca, made his debut there at 18, and left for Chivas in 2018 in one of the most expensive transfers in that club's history. Earlier that year he had come from two goals down against Necaxa and scored a hat-trick to win 5-2. This is a player who turns up in the specific minute it matters.
The Knee, and Why Alexis Vega Is Here at All
Vega had knee surgery in January 2026 and played through pain afterwards. Javier Aguirre set him a condition: if he was not physically right, he was not going to the World Cup. Vega spent months with the national team kinesiologists rebuilding the leg until both were equally strong, and made the 26. He turned off his own social media at the training centre to keep his head straight.
He got four appearances at the tournament and an assist, behind César Huerta and Julián Quiñones in a crowded attack. But the 10 was his, and for a second World Cup after Qatar, so was the squad place. Not everyone in that position gets there.
